Introduction:  Before you start reading, a brief introduction of the characters may be in order…

Kaze (“Wind”) – Experienced demon-hunter, living with the werewolf change for several years now.  Originally from mainland Asia, but has traveled the world extensively.  Currently lives in Japan, serving a new master, and learning new battle techniques.

Ikiyouyou (“In high and proud spirits”) – Japanese demon-hunter, cursed at a young age by a wayward spell, now sporting canine features.  Namely white dog ears and claws.  Has served her Japanese sensei for many years before Kaze’s arrival.

Summary:  The story takes place in modern times, in Japan.  In particular, this episode describes an early mission, just after Kaze and Ikiyouyou start working together.

Youkai Busters:  First Encounter
By
Ikiyouyou and Kaze

* * * * *

Frigid winds howled through the craggy gray peaks of Mount Samuiryuu.  Nothing grew on these lifeless rocks, and nothing could be heard other than the wind and the soft creaking of a taut rope.  Claws scrabbled on hard stone as Kaze paused in rappelling down the cliff’s face.  A loosed pebble was knocked free, and she watched as it plummeted downward, eventually lost in the haze below.  Sighing, she glanced upward through her frosty breath to where her partner waited somewhere above.  They had almost reached their goal.  Finally.  Wind ruffled Kaze’s black and silver fur as she considered her position.

She hung suspended just above a rock overhang, under which the cave should be hidden.  A good leap and swing should have her touching down just inside.  Taking a deep breath, Kaze yelled upward, “Yo!  Almost there!”

A white head appeared above, silhouetted against the gray sky.  “Good!  Catch!”  Ikiyouyou held out her hand and promptly dropped a black, undistinguishable object.

“Whaa--!”  Kaze twitched violently out of the way and snagged the backpack’s strap on its way past.  Swinging lightly back and forth, she shouted back, “Watch it!  You almost hit me!”

Only a muffled response was heard, and Kaze assumed Ikiyou had gone back to preparing the rest of their gear.  Growling softly, she used her claws to stabilize her swing.  “Give me a minute so I can anchor the rope!”  Then, with a mighty push, she swung off and dropped the remaining forty feet to the cave’s floor.  She unclipped herself from the rope, dropped the pack on the floor, and cast about for some stone to tie the rope down with.  Finding nothing, she resigned herself to holding the rope with one clawed foot.  Then she glanced above to the black shape of the overhang.  “Ready when you are!”

Having already clipped two packs of supplies to the rope, Ikiyouyou slid the first one down the rope to her waiting ally.  She clipped on the third and started to ponder the mission for the nth time.  She really wished she were elsewhere at the moment.  Preferably somewhere with sunshine and blue skies.  But no.  She had to accompany that crude, hairy, thing down there on yet another mission, to spirits knew where, that Iki could take care of herself.  She had to baby-sit that werefreak until it proved itself worthy of those swords, Masamune no Daburu Himitsu[1], in Sensei’s possession.  Letting out a gusty sigh, Ikiyou arched her back to ease tense muscles, and gazed off into the sky.

“Hey!  You fall asleep, or what?”  Ikiyou started, and twitched a white ear in annoyance.  Roughly kicking off the second pack, and shoving the third, and last, soon after it, she readied herself for her own dramatic entrance.  Deciding to bypass the direct route of the rope down the front of the overhang, she sprinted off to the side.  Bending down and touching the tips of her clawed fingers to the ground, she vaulted over the cliff’s edge.  “Ya-haa!”  Rockslide Ninjutsu was totally cool!  Channeling energy to the hand touching the stone, she slid downwards, long white hair trailing after and blue kimono flapping in the wind.  Gray rock became a blur as it rushed past her.

As she passed the overhang, she touched a foot to the wall, redirecting energy to slow her descent.  Spying Kaze, she came to a halt and gave a jaunty wave.  Then she kicked off of the wall and launched herself safely into the cave.

Ikiyou strode over to where Kaze stood gazing into the depths of the cave.  The werewolf twitched an ear in acknowledgement.  “Hey!  See anything?”  Iki asked.  Kaze remained silent for a few moments.  Briefly, Ikiyou wondered what it must be like to have senses as keen as Kaze’s.  Sure, being a dog “demon,” Ikiyouyou had all the senses of a finely trained hunting dog: enhanced sight, hearing, smell… But, after working together through several missions, all the indications were that Kaze took “enhanced” senses and upped them to the next level.  Or the next several levels.  Must be nearly maddening, Ikiyou thought, to be constantly bombarded by all those intense sounds…smells…And, although Ikiyou had yet to see it herself, Kaze had hinted at having even stronger senses in her final form.  Wolf.

“Hmmm…”  Kaze seemed to almost lazily stare into the gloom, head held upward, nose and ears twitching occasionally.  “Nope.”  Then her glowing golden eyes shifted craftily to the side to land on Ikiyouyou.  “But now that you’re here, I do catch the stench of something really nasty.”

            “Hey!”  Ikiyou growled.

Kaze smirked and returned her attention to the darkness.  “I’m pretty sure it’s that…thing…we’ve been tracking.  The scent is thick here, but extends farther into the cave.  It seems recent.”  All of Kaze’s knowledge and experience screamed “dragon!”  But there was something just wrong with the signs that had been left behind.  Something unnatural.  Kaze had the strongest feeling that she should know what that meant, like it was on the tip of her tongue…

“This place reeks of youkai.”[2]  Iki stated.

            “Ya think?”

Kaze turned around to grab the packs.  She tossed two to Ikiyou.  “Here.”

Ikiyou tossed them back.  “Here yourself.”

Kaze gave Ikiyouyou her “What-the-heck?” expression.  Ikiyou, waving a hand loftily in the air, turned around to face the cave’s depths.  “I’m going to be sniffing out the enemy, I can’t be carrying the packs around.”

“You can at least carry one, fleabag.”  And Kaze shoved a pack into Ikiyou’s arms as she strode past into the gloom, hefting the other three onto her back.

Rolling her eyes, Ikiyouyou proceeded ahead of Kaze, pulling out an mp3 player from her deep pockets.  Arranging the headphones over her ears, she got down on all fours and started to sniff out the trail.  Well aware that Kaze’s hearing was many orders of magnitude above her own, Ikiyou said, “Give me a ring if you hear anything.”

            “Hmph.”

Rocking to the beat of her music, Ikiyou followed the scent trail.  “Free to run around all daaay…Free to do it all my waaaay!”  She sang.  Kaze let out a quiet snort of amusement, but let her tail wag to the beat, which she could clearly hear.  The two demon-hunters continued onward, vanishing into the blackness.

After roughly half an hour, the tunnel widened.  Kaze stopped as she spied a heavy, rusted iron door blocking the way.  Ikiyouyou continued onward, nose glued to the dirt.  “I want to chaaange the world!  Kaze wo kakenukete…”  Kaze watched, eyebrow raised.  Suddenly, some uncanny sixth sense brought Ikiyouyou up short, just shy of the door.  She brought her head up with a jerk, hair brushing against the iron surface.  Ikiyou blinked.  “It’s through here!” She pointed.

            “So open it.”

Ikiyou put her shoulder against the door and heaved with all her might.  Very, very slowly, the door groaned open.  Kaze flicked her ears back at the noise.  Iki stopped when the opening was just wide enough to admit the two of them.  Well, what do ya know…she did it.  She roll a perfect twenty, or something?[3]  Kaze wondered.

Ikiyou, still bopping to the music, practically skipped through the doorway.  Ka-thunk!  A steel arrow wedged itself into the rock to the left of Iki, just shy of her head.  Eyes widened, she promptly proceeded to bop in reverse out the door.  She pointed into the doorway.  “You go first!”

Kaze stalked forward until she towered over Ikiyou.  Ripping the headphones off her head she growled, “Stow it.”  She shoved them into Iki’s hands and headed for the rusted door.  Edging her head around the side, Kaze peered into the darkness.  Thook-snap!  ...Ah, there’s the trap.

Ears twitched at sudden chatter in the background.  Then… “Kaze!”  Kaze pulled her head out of the gap and turned to look at Ikiyouyou, who had the cell phone glued to her ear.

“Oh, just a sec.”  Iki returned her attention to the phone.  “Oh yeah, were fine…yeah, we’re totally cool…No really!  We’re fine.  I-”  She did a double take on Kaze, jaw dropping.  Turing the phone around, she positioned it in front of her.  Kaze caught the distinct voice of their Sensei, on the other side of the line: “Iki…Iki!…Answer the phone!  Iki!”  Ikiyou snapped the photo and sent it.  “See?  We’re cool!”

Kaze rolled her eyes and snapped the arrow held in her jaws in half, spitting out the pieces.  “I want a copy of that.”  Kaze turned back to the door.  “Wait here.”  Slipping back inside, she put on a burst of speed and shot towards the arrow trap, nimbly dodging the bolts until she leapt up right next to it.  A swift strike with her claws, and Kaze landed on the ground, pieces of the machine tumbling down around her.  “All clear!”

Snapping the phone shut with a flourish, Ikiyouyou moved – more carefully this time – through the door.  She found Kaze on the other side of a room carved out of the mountain itself, giving everything a once-over, before kneeling and examining the debris at her feet.  “So you got it, I see,” Ikiyou commented.

“Ya.  Piece o’ cake.  I think we’re getting close, so I’m going to leave my packs here.”  Kaze stood up.  “I think…this may have been some old smuggler’s hideout, from the trap.  There were others, but they don’t work anymore, apparently.  Although it’s beyond me how any smuggler could have gotten way up here… Maybe there’s another entrance, or something.  Anyway, this creature most likely took the place as a matter of convenience.  No one else has been here in ages.”

Ikiyou nodded in agreement.  Looking at a second door leading out of the room, she considered.  The demonic aura clearly stemmed from the other side of that door.  In fact…not only was the aura awfully strong, the youkai’s presence reeked, foul and just…Gah, that is soo nasty.  Ugh.  It’s huge…and not friendly.  Ikiyou shivered and turned to Kaze.

“Because of my greater experience with youkai in Japan, I’ll go first to see what we’re dealing with and figure out the best course of action.  Stay behind me.”

Kaze regarded Ikiyou for a moment, amused at the little speech.  “Very well.  You know though, that staying behind you isn’t much different than standing beside you.  Since I’m so much bigger, anyway.”

“Yeah, but if it attacks me, I’ll have my sword out, which can deflect the attack.”  Ikiyou grinned.  “Besides, if I have to attack I don’t want someone right next to me.”  And with that she stepped confidently forward, hand stretched outward, to shove the door wide for another dramatic entrance.

            It didn’t budge.

“What the--!”  After a few more useless shoves, the dog “demon” flung her full weight against the cold iron and heaved with all her might.  “Grrrr…”  Suddenly, the door gave and swung abruptly open to clang loudly against the opposing wall.  Ikiyou stumbled forward as she lost her balance, but managed to recover before she hit the ground.  She threw a glare back at her werewolf partner, who stood with one hand on the door, inspecting the interior.  Kaze glanced downward at Ikiyou.

            “What?”

Grumbling about the injustice of allowing werewolves to flaunt their super-human abilities, Ikiyou straightened, brushing down her kimono, and peered into the gloom.  A soft whisper of sound caught her attention and she reached down to unsheathe her sword.  Her ears flicked backwards momentarily as she heard Kaze step lightly back to melt into the darkness.  She always did prefer the stealthy approach.  Attacking from the least expected direction.  Of course, her dark coloring and attire certainly helped her to use darkness as the perfect camouflage.  Fading in and out of the shadows like a freaking ghost…not that she needed it.

Ikiyouyou, on the other hand, liked to do things much more directly.  Armed with a sword that practically glowed with unrealized potential, the promise of nearly infinite power, she made no secret of the fact that she wouldn’t hesitate to use it, bold and direct.  Shifting easily into a basic guard stance, Ikiyou waited for the youkai to reveal itself.

Something stirred in the gloom, the barest hint of movement as a form took shape.  Black upon black, a head reared up, followed by a long neck.  What could have been wings stretched upward, before snapping back with an odd, grinding clatter.  A creaking noise followed as the thing appeared to take a breath.  Ikiyou tensed, expecting an attack, but what followed was only a deep, gurgling chuckle.  Pale, white orbs flashed into existence, lighting empty sockets.

Now Iki could finally see the thing clearly.  The corpse of a dragon, almost nothing remaining but blackened bone and patches of dried, withered skin, stretched taut in some places and hanging loose in others.  Bones, lacking anything resembling cartilage, ground and clattered together, joined only by shriveled tendons or muscle.  It stood about fifty feet away on four sets of chipped claws, splayed out wide on the stone floor.  A long array of tail vertebrae lashed in the darkness behind it.

So.  Kaze was right about suspecting a dragon, although it wasn’t nearly as large as some she’d seen, but that wasn’t the half of it.  Not a mere undead creature, this was a youkai-possessed corpse, and Iki wondered where the thing had met its untimely end in order to have such a fate befall it.  Now wasn’t the time for idle chit-chat, however; her nose wrinkled at its evil stench.  Better to attack first than be drawn into demon-possessed conversation.  Things were infinitely safer that way.

Without warning, both Ikiyou and the dragon moved forward in attack.  The dragon launched itself forward on frail, but unnaturally strong legs, covering the ground in one leap.  As its head struck forward, Iki, already in the air, brought her sword down onto its bony neck.  The sword ground to a halt in the neck’s tough ligaments, and Iki was forced to yank it back out.  Irked, the dragon let out a long, raspy, howling wail.  Iki completed her leap, somersaulting to land behind the creature.

As the two continued the battle, Kaze dashed forward into the cavern.  Leaping nimbly with practiced ease, she dodged though the battle and began scouring the room with experienced eyes, looking for treasure.  Her first glance at the twisted carcass had brought a feeling of dismay.  Dragon, yes, but dead dragons didn’t hoard treasure, and she doubted this was its original sanctuary.  Longing to join in the thrill of the fight, she almost doubled back.  But she figured that the demon might still have some type of magical item lying around, so it was always worth a look.

Vaulting silently upwards to a better vantage point, Kaze quickly scanned the room with her enhanced eyesight.  Finding nothing, she suppressed a snarl of frustration.  On the way down, however, she spied a small item tangled around one of the dragon’s neck vertebrae.  Faint light cast by the sparks of Ikiyouyou’s sword colliding with black claws revealed a tiny oval amulet, deep purple in color.  Half concealed by melted flesh, it gave off an unearthly darkened glow of evil.

Victory!  Kaze often used a (mostly) fictitious desire for treasure to disguise her true goal:  those unique and often magical objects frequently found nearby.  After all, she could steal mere gold and jewels just about any time, but these objects were what made the hunt worthwhile.  And there was something very interesting right now, almost within reach.  Kaze touched down and sprinted towards the demon carcass.

A split second before she made the final leap, she spied something else glowing weakly within the dragon, through a gap in its side.  Its steady beat identified it as the once-dragon’s heart.  Changing direction, Kaze sprung onto the dragon’s back, plunged a wickedly clawed hand through tendon, muscle, and splintering bone, and ripped out the heart, removing any last remnants of lingering dragon soul.  She leapt off as the dragon violently thrashed and let out a bone-chilling scream.

“Iki!  Think you can grab that amulet?”

            “Where?  Where!”

“You dork.  It’s right above you!”

Both the dragon and Ikiyouyou reacted at the same instant.  Kaze watched as the dragon reared upward and Ikiyou jumped for the amulet.  Now’s the perfect chance.  Kaze whipped out a small, green origami Chinese dragon.  She smiled as it seemed to glimmer in anticipation.  This was one of her prized attacks, learned after visiting Japan and being roped into serving under Sensei.

Many of the demon-hunters in this area used divine paper seals to combat demons and other evil forces.  Never content to do things the same as everyone else, Kaze invented a new twist to the skill.  She almost laughed as she remembered her first prank.  Exploding origami never got old.  But the elaborate paper-folding served more than just a decorative purpose.  Kaze had quickly learned that some of her more arcane spells learned in the depths of mainland Asia could be combined with the origami art to seal the holy enchantment within the folds of the paper.  Otherwise, the natural degeneration of the ink and paper, combined with the limited energy-bonding capacity of such an ordinary object, would cause the enchantment to weaken and dissipate over time.  Now, unlike other demon-hunters, Kaze’s divine paper would last virtually forever.  Adding in the water- and fire-proofing charms inscribed around the border of the paper, and you had a nearly indestructible, innocent-looking, mini-spirit-bomb.

Holding the little dragon up high, Kaze roared, “Divine Bindings!”  The little paper creature jolted to life.  Singing with enthusiasm, it shot forward in a spiral of dazzling emerald light.  As it reached the youkai, it burst into cords of intense energy, instantly wrapping around the entire length of the monster and pulling tight.

The corpse gave a mighty bellow as the demon inside was literally fried by the holy power.  Seeking escape, the demon exploded upward out of the dragon’s jaws, pulsing in rage and agony as a twisting column of black smoke.

Ikiyouyou, still in the process of ascending, pushed off of the dragon’s skull, boosting her jump.  Rising to the top of the demon smoke, sword raised over her head, she gave a mighty yell, “This is it!  Lightning Strike!”  A line of blinding white light flashed through the smoke, following the path of Iki’s sword as she bisected the writhing blackness on her way down.  Pale blue electricity ripped through the cloud, causing a shriek of pain.

At the same time, the wild song of a phoenix heralded the unleashing of another of Kaze’s little friends.  Iki glanced up at the cloud in time to see a sun-gold spear of light lance into the heart of the demon’s form.

A deafening explosion followed the violent clash of magics.  The shockwave slammed Ikiyou downward, straight through the collapsing pile of spiritless dragon carcass.  The snapping of bone and ripping of muscles filled her ears.  Finally Iki hit the ground, blackened dragon remains raining down around her.

Having crushed the dragon’s heart, Kaze stood regarding the settling pile of debris and pulverized bone.  One ear twitched in gross fascination.  That has got to be…Oh ewww!  I don’t think I can take it anymore!  Keen hearing picked out raspy squelching noises from somewhere deep inside.  The pile shifted, which dislodged a wide swath of melting muscle and skin, causing it to sort of slither down the side, flopping in a semi-liquidated glop on the floor.  That was the last straw.  Kaze collapsed into a fit of laughter.  “I’m so glad I’m not… That is the most disgusting…!”

Ikiyou suddenly burst out of the decomposing mess, proudly straightening and brushing off ebony bone dust, and flinging melting ligaments everywhere.  Then she brandished the amulet, swinging it in a circle around one finger.  With a flourish, Iki tossed the amulet up and caught it in her fist.  “Got it!”

“Joy,” Kaze gasped, managing to bring her hilarity under control.

Ikiyouyou clambered out of the disarray, kicking bones to the side as she went.  After she cleared the pile, Kaze moved closer to get a better look at the amulet.  “Let’s see.”

            “See?  Isn’t it cool?”

The deep purple object was a flattened oval in shape, attached to a dark brown, leather cord.  The stone sparkled faintly in the golden light from Kaze’s glowing eyes.  Kaze reached out to take the amulet.  Closing her eyes, she concentrated on the feel of the smooth stone between her fingers.  It held a slight warmth, briefly heated from Ikiyou’s touch.  And…there!  That faint spark of dwindling evil was the only indication of the aura she had witnessed before.

“Hmmm.”  Opening her eyes and rolling the stone thoughtfully between her fingers, Kaze pondered the possibilities.  “I think…the stone may resonate with the energy of whoever wears it.  It might even help to amplify whatever powers that being employs.  Such an all-purpose object probably isn’t too powerful, though; just enough to give a small edge.”

“I wonder…”  Ikiyouyou crossed her arms.

The two demon-hunters turned to exit the cavern, leaving the old carcass to disintegrate.  The only thing holding it together in the first place had been the strong demonic will.  Now, with the demon destroyed, the enormous stress of the possession was finally taking its toll.  In a few short hours, there’d be nothing left but ashes.

After reaching the first cavern, Kaze headed for the packs she left behind.  Opening one, she pulled out a deep blue amulet, nearly identical to the one they found.  Holding them side-by-side, Kaze said, “Well, now we know what that rock was that Sensei gave us.  Here.”  Kaze tossed the blue one over to Ikiyou.

“Thanks.  You know…I know exactly what these are.  These are the legendary Amulets of the Void!”  Ikiyou paused for the appropriate expression of awe from her companion.

Kaze blinked.  “Oookay.”  She turned back to the pack and rustled around for a moment.  “What do you want?  Ham or turkey?  I’m starved.”

“What!  After all that work I did to slay the dragon, and rescue the amulet, all you can think about is food?  You glutton!  Don’t you even want to hear about them?”

“Sure.”  Kaze left Ikiyou to decide to which question that referred, and dug out a sandwich, preparing to chow down.

Ikiyou glared daggers at her insolent friend and proceeded to regale her with the legend of the Void Amulets.  “The void is one of the five elements in Shinto mythology, and it’s the most powerful.  Supposedly, these amulets together represent each of those elements, with the fifth representing the Void.  And when brought together, the amulets form a really powerful energy source.”

Between bites, Kaze replied, “Cool.  So which ones do we have?”

“I have no freakin’ clue without studying them a bit more.”

Kaze finished her sandwich, balled up the wrapper and tossed it backwards.  Standing up and stretching, she picked up all three of the packs and turned to Ikiyou.  Then, pointing a thumb back over her shoulder, “Let’s make like a banana and split.”

            Ikiyou grinned.

* * * * *

Kaze and Ikiyouyou plummeted through the clouds, Kaze with her arms wrapped securely around Ikiyou’s neck, making an effort not to hold on too tightly.  How did I get myself talked into this?  Oh yeah…it was more like a trip and push.  Ikiyou’s Water Walking ability sure came in handy sometimes, allowing her to walk on anything from water to leaves, to vertical surfaces, to clouds.  So here they were, a controlled fall at a steady speed through the thick clouds surrounding the mountain.

This is so cool!   Ikiyou grinned, her heightened senses and ability allowing her to feel the individual drops of water as they brushed past her outstretched fingers.  She could feel her ki connecting her to the beads of moisture, could feel the currents of air movement through the clouds, could discern the shape of the cloud.  Ah, there is nothing like this in the world!  Ikiyou closed her eyes and delighted in the sensation of wind rushing through her hair.

A nagging thought suddenly struck Kaze full force.  “Iki!”  She yelled over the wind.

            “Huh?”

“What happens when we run out of clouds?”

“Oh.  You’re right.”  Quick maneuvering on Iki’s part unexpectedly placed her on Kaze’s back.  “You go first.”

A Peek at Me: Advocate, Protector, and Counselor

((This was my score again, so might as well talk about it.  I'm an Advocate, a Counselor.))

INFJ PERSONALITY (“THE ADVOCATE”)

((Borrowed from http://www.16personalities.com/infj-personality))

My Type Preferences
Introvert(19%) iNtuitive(38%) Feeling(25%) Judging(19%)

The INFJ personality type is very rare, making up less than one percent of the population, but they nonetheless leave their mark on the world. As Diplomats (NF), they have an inborn sense of idealism and morality, but what sets them apart is the accompanying Judging (J) trait – INFJs are not idle dreamers, but people capable of taking concrete steps to realize their goals and make a lasting positive impact.

INFJs tend to see helping others as their purpose in life, but while people with this personality type can be found engaging rescue efforts and doing charity work, their real passion is to get to the heart of the issue so that people need not be rescued at all.
Help Me Help You

INFJ personalityINFJs indeed share a very unique combination of traits: though soft-spoken, they have very strong opinions and will fight tirelessly for an idea they believe in. They are decisive and strong-willed, but will rarely use that energy for personal gain – INFJs will act with creativity, imagination, conviction and sensitivity not to create advantage, but to create balance. Egalitarianism and karma are very attractive ideas to INFJs, and they tend to believe that nothing would help the world so much as using love and compassion to soften the hearts of tyrants.

Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.
Martin Luther King
INFJs find it easy to make connections with others, and have a talent for warm, sensitive language, speaking in human terms, rather than with pure logic and fact. It makes sense that their friends and colleagues will come to think of them as quiet Extroverted types, but they would all do well to remember that INFJs need time alone to decompress and recharge, and to not become too alarmed when they suddenly withdraw. INFJs take great care of other’s feelings, and they expect the favor to be returned – sometimes that means giving them the space they need for a few days.

Live to Fight Another Day

Really though, it is most important for INFJs to remember to take care of themselves. The passion of their convictions is perfectly capable of carrying them past their breaking point and if their zeal gets out of hand, they can find themselves exhausted, unhealthy and stressed. This becomes especially apparent when INFJs find themselves up against conflict and criticism – their sensitivity forces them to do everything they can to evade these seemingly personal attacks, but when the circumstances are unavoidable, they can fight back in highly irrational, unhelpful ways.

To INFJs, the world is a place full of inequity – but it doesn’t have to be. No other personality type is better suited to create a movement to right a wrong, no matter how big or small. INFJs just need to remember that while they’re busy taking care of the world, they need to take care of themselves, too.

INFJ STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

INFJ Strengths

Creative – Combining a vivid imagination with a strong sense of compassion, INFJs use their creativity to resolve not technical challenges, but human ones. People with the INFJ personality type enjoy finding the perfect solution for someone they care about, and this strength makes them excellent counselors and advisors.

Insightful – Seeing through dishonesty and disingenuous motives, INFJs step past manipulation and sales tactics and into a more honest discussion. INFJs see how people and events are connected, and are able to use that insight to get to the heart of the matter.

Inspiring and Convincing – Speaking in human terms, not technical, INFJs have a fluid, inspirational writing style that appeals to the inner idealist in their audience. INFJs can even be astonishingly good orators, speaking with warmth and passion, if they are proud of what they are speaking for.

Decisive – Their creativity, insight and inspiration are able to have a real impact on the world, as INFJs are able to follow through on their ideas with conviction, willpower, and the planning necessary to see complex projects through to the end. INFJs don’t just see the way things ought to be, they act on those insights.

Determined and Passionate – When INFJs come to believe that something is important, they pursue that goal with a conviction and energy that can catch even their friends and loved ones off guard. INFJs will rock the boat if they have to, something not everyone likes to see, but their passion for their chosen cause is an inseparable part of their personality.

Altruistic – These strengths are used for good. INFJs have strong beliefs and take the actions that they do not because they are trying to advance themselves, but because they are trying to advance an idea that they truly believe will make the world a better place.

INFJ Weaknesses

Sensitive – When someone challenges or criticizes INFJs’ principles or values, they are likely to receive an alarmingly strong response. People with the INFJ personality type are highly vulnerable to criticism and conflict, and questioning their motives is the quickest way to their bad side.

Extremely Private – INFJs tend to present themselves as the culmination of an idea. This is partly because they believe in this idea, but also because INFJs are extremely private when it comes to their personal lives, using this image to keep themselves from having to truly open up, even to close friends. Trusting a new friend can be even more challenging for INFJs.

Perfectionistic – INFJs are all but defined by their pursuit of ideals. While this is a wonderful quality in many ways, an ideal situation is not always possible – in politics, in business, in romance – and INFJs too often drop or ignore healthy and productive situations and relationships, always believing there might be a better option down the road.

Always Need to Have a Cause – INFJs get so caught up in the passion of their pursuits that any of the cumbersome administrative or maintenance work that comes between them and the ideal they see on the horizon is deeply unwelcome. INFJs like to know that they are taking concrete steps towards their goals, and if routine tasks feel like they are getting in the way, or worse yet, there is no goal at all, they will feel restless and disappointed.

Can Burn Out Easily – Their passion, poor patience for routine maintenance, tendency to present themselves as an ideal, and extreme privacy tend to leave INFJs with few options for letting off steam. People with this personality type are likely to exhaust themselves in short order if they don’t find a way to balance their ideals with the realities of day-to-day living.

INFJ FRIENDS

There is a running theme with INFJs, and that is a yearning for authenticity and sincerity – in their activities, their romantic relationships, and their friendships. People with the INFJ personality type are unlikely to go for friendships of circumstance, like workplace social circles or chatting up their local baristas, where the only thing they really have in common is a day-to-day familiarity. Rather, INFJs seek out people who share their passions, interests and ideologies, people with whom they can explore philosophies and subjects that they believe are truly meaningful.

Closed Book and Speed Reader

INFJ friendsFrom the start, it can be a challenge to get to know INFJs, as they are very private, even enigmatic. INFJs don’t readily share their thoughts and feelings, not unless they are comfortable, and since those thoughts and feelings are the basis for INFJ friendships, it can take time and persistence to get to know them. Meanwhile, INFJs are very insightful and have a particular knack for seeing beyond others’ facades, interpreting intent and compatibility quickly and easily, and weeding out those who don’t share the depth of their idealism.

In friendship it is as though INFJs are searching for a soul mate, someone who shares every facet of their passions and imagination.

INFJs are often perfectionistic, looking for ultimate compatibility, and yet also look for someone with whom they can grow and improve in tandem. Needless to say, this is a tall order, and INFJs should try to remember that they are a particularly rare personality type, and even if they find someone compatible in that sense, the odds that they will also share every interest are slim. If they don’t learn to meet others halfway and recognize that the kind of self-improvement and depth they demand is simply exhausting for many types, INFJs are likely end up abandoning healthy friendships in their infancy, in search of more perfect compatibilities.

Like Finding a Needle in a Haystack

Further complicating things are INFJs’ eloquence and persuasiveness, which lead to a lot of (unwanted) attention and popularity. Their quiet, determined idealism and imaginative expression naturally draw influence, and if there’s anything INFJs avoid, it’s the accumulation of power over others – and the people who are drawn to that type of power. INFJs will find themselves more sought after than they’d ever care to be, making it even more difficult for them to find someone they truly have an affinity with. Really the only way to be counted among INFJs’ true friends is to be authentic, and to have that authenticity naturally reflect their own.

Once a common thread is found though, people with the INFJ personality type make loyal and supportive companions, encouraging growth and life-enriching experiences with warmth, excitement and care. As trust grows, INFJs will share more of what lies beneath the surface, and if those ideas and motives are mutual, it’s the sort of friendship that will transcend time and distance, lasting a lifetime. INFJs don’t require a great deal of day-to-day attention – for them, quality trumps quantity every time, and over the years they will likely end up with just a few true friendships, built on a richness of mutual understanding that forges an indelible link between them.

INFJ CAREERS

INFJs are likely to find that most corporate career paths are not designed for them, but for those focused on status and material gain. This doesn’t mean that people with the INFJ personality type struggle to see viable options though. In fact, they are likely to face the opposite problem – many INFJs struggle to begin a career early on because they see ten wildly different paths forward, each with its own intrinsic rewards, alluring but also heartbreaking, because each means abandoning so much else.

Truth, Beauty, Purpose

First and foremost, INFJs need to find meaning in their work, to know that they are helping and connecting with people – an INFJ Ferrari salesperson is a non-sequitur. This desire to help and connect makes careers in healthcare, especially the more holistic varieties, very rewarding for INFJs – roles as counselors, psychologists, doctors, life coaches and spiritual guides are all attractive options.

INFJs’ needs don’t end at meaning though – any productive work can be rationalized to be meaningful, as any productive work helps someone, somewhere. INFJs crave creativity too, the ability to use their insight to connect events and situations, effecting real change in others’ lives personally.

For INFJs, money and Employee of the Month simply won’t cut it compared to living their values and principles.

Two Roads Diverged in a Yellowed Wood

These needs are hard to meet in a corporate structure, where INFJs will be forced to manage someone else’s policies alongside their own. For this reason, people with the INFJ personality type are more likely to, despite their aversion to controlling others, establish their independence by either finding a leadership position, or simply starting their own practice. As independents, sole proprietors in the parlance of business, INFJs are free to follow their hearts, applying their personal touch, creativity and altruism to everything they do.

This is the most rewarding option for INFJs, as they will step out of the overly humble supporting and noncompetitive roles they are often drawn to, and into positions where they can grow and make a difference. INFJs often pursue expressive careers such as writing, elegant communicators that they are, and author many popular blogs, stories and screenplays. Music, photography, design and art are viable options too, and they all can focus on deeper themes of personal growth, morality and spirituality.

Where INFJs fall flat is in work focusing on impersonal concerns, mundanity, and high-profile conflict. Accounting and auditing, data analysis and routine work will leave people with the INFJ personality type fidgety and unfulfilled, and they will simply wilt under the scrutiny, criticism and pressure of courtroom prosecution and defense, corporate politics and cold-call sales. INFJs are clever, and can function in any of these fields, but to be truly happy, they need to be able to exercise their insightfulness and independence, learn and grow alongside the people they are helping, and contribute to the well-being of humanity on a personal level.

INFJ IN THE WORKPLACE

INFJs have pretty tall demands when it comes to a satisfying work environment. Not only does this personality type need to be able to express their creativity and insight, INFJs need to know that what they are doing has meaning, helps people, leads to personal growth and, all the while, is in line with their values, principles and beliefs.

Oftentimes the best way for INFJs to achieve this is to not have to answer to others’ rules at all – to be their own boss, neither above nor below anyone else, just directly interacting with the people and ideas that are important to them. All that being said, INFJs are a clever and inspired group, and with a few of the right conditions, most any position can be made to work.

INFJ Subordinates

As subordinates, INFJs are likely to chafe under hardline rules, formal hierarchies and routine tasks. People with the INFJ personality type value diplomacy and sensitivity, and the more democratic and personal their manager’s style is, and the more they feel their independence and input are valued, the happier they’ll be. INFJs act on their convictions, so when they do something, it’s something that has meaning to them – if those actions come under criticism, even justified complaints, but especially unwarranted ones, their morale is likely to tank spectacularly.

A manager’s values need to be naturally aligned with their INFJ subordinates for both parties to be most effective. Though usually idealistic, if they feel in conflict, INFJs can lose touch with that sense and end up all too bitter. But if it’s a balance they can handle, with a little encouragement every now and then, INFJs will be hardworking, trustworthy, and more than capable of handling their responsibilities and professional relationships.

INFJ Colleagues

As colleagues, INFJs are likely to become quite popular, being seen as positive, eloquent and capable friends, identifying others’ motives and defusing conflicts and tension before anyone else even senses a disturbance. INFJs are likely to prioritize harmony and cooperation over ruthless efficiency, encouraging a good, hardworking atmosphere and helping others when needed. While this is usually a strength, there is a risk that others will take advantage of INFJs’ commitment to their responsibilities by simply shifting their burdens onto their more dedicated INFJ colleagues’ desks.

It should also be remembered that at the end of the day, INFJs are still Introverts (I), and their popularity isn’t always welcome – they will need to step back and act the lone wolf from time to time, pursuing their own goals in their own ways. An unhealthy version of this tendency may pop up if INFJs sense that their values are being compromised by a more ethically relaxed colleague.

INFJ Managers

As managers, INFJs are often reluctant in exercising their authority, preferring to see their subordinates as equals, coordinating and supervising people, leaving the technical systems and factual details to more capable hands, and working hard to inspire and motivate, not to crack the whip. That’s not to say that people with the INFJ personality type have lax standards – far from it – as INFJs’ sense of equality means that they expect their subordinates to be as competent, motivated and reliable as the INFJs themselves.

Though sensitive, understanding, principled and just, able to appreciate individual styles and to make accurate judgments about others’ motivations, if a subordinate’s actions or attitude undermines INFJs’ ethics or values, they will find little comfort in these qualities. INFJs have no tolerance for lapses in reliability or morality. But, so long as no such lapse occurs, INFJs will work tirelessly to ensure that their subordinates feel valued and happy.

Few personality types are as sensitive and mysterious as INFJs. Your imagination and empathy make you someone who not only cherishes their integrity and deeply held principles but, unlike many other idealistic types, is also capable of turning those ideals into plans, and executing them.

Yet, as an INFJ, you are likely to be easily tripped up in areas where idealism and determination are more of a liability than an asset. Whether it is navigating interpersonal conflicts, confronting unpleasant facts, pursuing self-realization, or finding a career path that aligns well with your intricate inner core, you may face numerous challenges that at times can even make you question who you really are.

Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging
by Marina Margaret Heiss and Joe Butt
INFJs are distinguished by both their complexity of character and the unusual range and depth of their talents. Strongly humanitarian in outlook, INFJs tend to be idealists, and because of their J preference for closure and completion, they are generally "doers" as well as dreamers. This rare combination of vision and practicality often results in INFJs taking a disproportionate amount of responsibility in the various causes to which so many of them seem to be drawn.

INFJs are deeply concerned about their relations with individuals as well as the state of humanity at large. They are, in fact, sometimes mistaken for extroverts because they appear so outgoing and are so genuinely interested in people -- a product of the Feeling function they most readily show to the world. On the contrary, INFJs are true introverts, who can only be emotionally intimate and fulfilled with a chosen few from among their long-term friends, family, or obvious "soul mates." While instinctively courting the personal and organizational demands continually made upon them by others, at intervals INFJs will suddenly withdraw into themselves, sometimes shutting out even their intimates. This apparent paradox is a necessary escape valve for them, providing both time to rebuild their depleted resources and a filter to prevent the emotional overload to which they are so susceptible as inherent "givers." As a pattern of behavior, it is perhaps the most confusing aspect of the enigmatic INFJ character to outsiders, and hence the most often misunderstood -- particularly by those who have little experience with this rare type.

Due in part to the unique perspective produced by this alternation between detachment and involvement in the lives of the people around them, INFJs may well have the clearest insights of all the types into the motivations of others, for good and for evil. The most important contributing factor to this uncanny gift, however, are the empathic abilities often found in Fs, which seem to be especially heightened in the INFJ type (possibly by the dominance of the introverted N function).

This empathy can serve as a classic example of the two-edged nature of certain INFJ talents, as it can be strong enough to cause discomfort or pain in negative or stressful situations. More explicit inner conflicts are also not uncommon in INFJs; it is possible to speculate that the causes for some of these may lie in the specific combinations of preferences which define this complex type. For instance, there can sometimes be a "tug-of-war" between NF vision and idealism and the J practicality that urges compromise for the sake of achieving the highest priority goals. And the I and J combination, while perhaps enhancing self-awareness, may make it difficult for INFJs to articulate their deepest and most convoluted feelings.

Usually self-expression comes more easily to INFJs on paper, as they tend to have strong writing skills. Since in addition they often possess a strong personal charisma, INFJs are generally well-suited to the "inspirational" professions such as teaching (especially in higher education) and religious leadership. Psychology and counseling are other obvious choices, but overall, INFJs can be exceptionally difficult to pigeonhole by their career paths. Perhaps the best example of this occurs in the technical fields. Many INFJs perceive themselves at a disadvantage when dealing with the mystique and formality of "hard logic", and in academic terms this may cause a tendency to gravitate towards the liberal arts rather than the sciences. However, the significant minority of INFJs who do pursue studies and careers in the latter areas tend to be as successful as their T counterparts, as it is *iNtuition* -- the dominant function for the INFJ type -- which governs the ability to understand abstract theory and implement it creatively.

In their own way, INFJs are just as much "systems builders" as are INTJs; the difference lies in that most INFJ "systems" are founded on human beings and human values, rather than information and technology. Their systems may for these reasons be conceptually "blurrier" than analogous NT ones, harder to measure in strict numerical terms, and easier to take for granted -- yet it is these same underlying reasons which make the resulting contributions to society so vital and profound.

Beneath the quiet exterior, INFJs hold deep convictions about the weightier matters of life. Those who are activists - INFJs gravitate toward such a role - are there for the cause, not for personal glory or political power.

INFJs are champions of the oppressed and downtrodden. They often are found in the wake of an emergency, rescuing those who are in acute distress.INFJs may fantasize about getting revenge on those who victimize the defenseless. The concept of 'poetic justice' is appealing to the INFJ.

"There's something rotten in Denmark." Accurately suspicious about others' motives, INFJs are not easily led. These are the people that you can rarely fool any of the time.Though affable and sympathetic to most, INFJs are selective about their friends. Such a friendship is a symbiotic bond that transcends mere words.

INFJs have a knack for fluency in language and facility in communication. In addition, nonverbal sensitivity enables the INFJ to know and be known by others intimately.

Writing, counseling, public service and even politics are areas where INFJs frequently find their niche.

The Protector

As an INFJ, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you take things in primarily via intuition. Your secondary mode is external, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit with your personal value system.

INFJs are gentle, caring, complex and highly intuitive individuals. Artistic and creative, they live in a world of hidden meanings and possibilities. Only one percent of the population has an INFJ Personality Type, making it the most rare of all the types.

INFJs place great importance on havings things orderly and systematic in their outer world. They put a lot of energy into identifying the best system for getting things done, and constantly define and re-define the priorities in their lives. On the other hand, INFJs operate within themselves on an intuitive basis which is entirely spontaneous. They know things intuitively, without being able to pinpoint why, and without detailed knowledge of the subject at hand. They are usually right, and they usually know it. Consequently, INFJs put a tremendous amount of faith into their instincts and intuitions. This is something of a conflict between the inner and outer worlds, and may result in the INFJ not being as organized as other Judging types tend to be. Or we may see some signs of disarray in an otherwise orderly tendency, such as a consistently messy desk.

INFJs have uncanny insight into people and situations. They get "feelings" about things and intuitively understand them. As an extreme example, some INFJs report experiences of a psychic nature, such as getting strong feelings about there being a problem with a loved one, and discovering later that they were in a car accident. This is the sort of thing that other types may scorn and scoff at, and the INFJ themself does not really understand their intuition at a level which can be verbalized. Consequently, most INFJs are protective of their inner selves, sharing only what they choose to share when they choose to share it. They are deep, complex individuals, who are quite private and typically difficult to understand. INFJs hold back part of themselves, and can be secretive.

But the INFJ is as genuinely warm as they are complex. INFJs hold a special place in the heart of people who they are close to, who are able to see their special gifts and depth of caring. INFJs are concerned for people's feelings, and try to be gentle to avoid hurting anyone. They are very sensitive to conflict, and cannot tolerate it very well. Situations which are charged with conflict may drive the normally peaceful INFJ into a state of agitation or charged anger. They may tend to internalize conflict into their bodies, and experience health problems when under a lot of stress.

Because the INFJ has such strong intuitive capabilities, they trust their own instincts above all else. This may result in an INFJ stubborness and tendency to ignore other people's opinions. They believe that they're right. On the other hand, INFJ is a perfectionist who doubts that they are living up to their full potential. INFJs are rarely at complete peace with themselves - there's always something else they should be doing to improve themselves and the world around them. They believe in constant growth, and don't often take time to revel in their accomplishments. They have strong value systems, and need to live their lives in accordance with what they feel is right. In deference to the Feeling aspect of their personalities, INFJs are in some ways gentle and easy going. Conversely, they have very high expectations of themselves, and frequently of their families. They don't believe in compromising their ideals.

INFJ is a natural nurturer; patient, devoted and protective. They make loving parents and usually have strong bonds with their offspring. They have high expectations of their children, and push them to be the best that they can be. This can sometimes manifest itself in the INFJ being hard-nosed and stubborn. But generally, children of an INFJ get devoted and sincere parental guidance, combined with deep caring.

In the workplace, the INFJ usually shows up in areas where they can be creative and somewhat independent. They have a natural affinity for art, and many excel in the sciences, where they make use of their intuition. INFJs can also be found in service-oriented professions. They are not good at dealing with minutia or very detailed tasks. The INFJ will either avoid such things, or else go to the other extreme and become enveloped in the details to the extent that they can no longer see the big picture. An INFJ who has gone the route of becoming meticulous about details may be highly critical of other individuals who are not.

The INFJ individual is gifted in ways that other types are not. Life is not necessarily easy for the INFJ, but they are capable of great depth of feeling and personal achievement.

 The Study

While fashioned from rock like the rest of the place, the inhabitant of this room clearly at least made an effort to make it feel cozy. The lighting is warm, and the floor has been mostly covered by a large, antique rug, and the walls by wall tapestries with soothing colors; blue and purple. There’s an old reading chair set up by the door with a pile of books on it, and bookshelves filled with occult tomes and literature. In the far corner, there’s a wooden desk and chair.

There is a single, slim tome on the desk, a pen beside it. It’s an imbued item; a book that never runs out of pages; whenever the user reaches the last page, a turn of the page brings them to a new one, yet it somehow manages to stay the size of a novella.

February 29th, 2002.
At last I’ve settled on a promising first candidate for my work; a young Sleeper named Melissa Allman. Waitress at a nearby coffee. Middle class upbringing. College dropout. Ordinary.
But after deep scrutiny, I see a bright spark of potential buried underneath the mundane. She could become so much more.
It will be done quietly, of course. There are many, many who would have more than words for me if my actions were to be discovered.
I have no illusions that the process will not hurt her. If the Iron Gauntlet has taught me nothing else in all my years, it’s that enlightenment is never a gentle process, nor should it be. This will be a trial for both of us, but I’m confident that she will see the other side, forged from the struggle. Awakened.

March 5th, 2002.
“There was no enlightenment.
I tried to fix my mistakes after it was over, but there is nothing left to fix. These aren’t just fractures in her psyche, but a smoking crater where her mind used to be. She’s dead in everything but body, and after what I’ve done . . . the body isn’t long for this world either. Even Life magic can only heal so much.

There was no enlightenment. And there is no forgiveness for this.”

March 6th, 2002.
“Took care of the body.”

((The rest of the page is blank.))

March 10th, 2002.
“I’ve thought about Melissa the past few days.

But this is greater than me, her, or any of us. If my work results in the Awakening of even a single soul, if I can unlock that impenetrable secret, her blood on my hands will have been worthwhile. We are too few, and the number of new mages dwindles by the year. I’ve watched it happen. I’ve felt my own power slowly fade over the centuries, felt the distance between my soul and its Watchtower, ever widening. Inch by inch, magic is crumbling, and so are we.

The tests will continue. I will never escape what I have done here, and from what I will do. But perhaps one day, they will thank me for it.”

((The journal goes on to describe further “tests” performed on over a dozen kidnapped Sleeper subjects, both male and female. The means vary wildly, but are consistently brutal. Vivisection with a scalpel. Tampering with memories and emotions. Inducing painful, terrifying, euphoric states of mind. Warping the body with Life magic. Stopping their heart. Taking a sledgehammer to the psyche. Dangerous amounts of blood loss. These are just the tip of the iceberg. Most die. The rest are released with their memories erased and nearly irreparable mental damage.))

((The writer carefully logs each Sleeper’s background and the tortures inflicted on them separately. The first couple are thick with remorse, heavy on rationalizations and light on the details of the experiments themselves. He continues to repeat that he cannot be forgiven. But the further you read, the more clinical and explicit the entries become – cold, detached. There is a feeling of tightness about them, as though if he allows himself to articulate too much he will shatter :))

December 30th, 2005
“Test on Richard Wilmoth resulted in failure. Subject was a drifter suffering from alcohol and nicotine addictions. Abusive childhood. Experienced difficulties with authority figures throughout his life. No higher education. No close personal ties. Aged 37 at time of death.

Procedures showed initial promise, but were ultimately ineffective. Alternated bet
ween simulating the effects of heavy depressant drugs and flooding his body with stimulants, including quantities of adrenaline well past the amount naturally produced by the body. This was sustained for eight hours, during which the subject entered an altered state of consciousness, where I used events extracted from his memories in to create hallucinations of his worst inner demons for him to overcome. Little progress at this stage. Heart rate spiked dramatically and subject completely withdrew mentally instead of attempting to face the conflict. Could not draw him out.

At the eight hour mark, the subject’s heart gave out and he went into cardiac arrest. Problem resolved with Life magic and test continued. Directed psychic assaults at the subject in an attempt to force him to mentally emerge and defend himself. No success; subject remained in a near catatonic state. Experimented once again with effects of reshaping the frontal and parietal lobe-”

((This entry continues on for several pages.))

((At some point, the writer begins capturing spirits and testing the effects of spells on them to judge if they should then be used on the Sleepers. Specifically, he frequently references a spirit named Etzel.))

May 6th, 2006
“A success. An actual goddamn successful Awakening after everything. And I was the one to bring it to fruition.

Until that breakthrough, I was certain I was going to lose another one; she was only a hair away from death when it happened. Fitting for a new Moros.

I’ve cut her every sympathetic tie to me and my work, healed what I could, implanted false memories of these events and a subtle urging to seek out San Diego’s Concilium members. They should be able to take care of her from here. Jodi Ashwell will have a new life when she opens her eyes.

But there’s not enough evidence yet to prove that my methods are successful. If anyone is to be convinced, I’ll need a pattern of cause and effect I can point to. And for that, I need more Sleepers.”

((Over the next four years, there are two more successful Awakenings recorded. But there is no consistency in the precise methods which triggered them, no pattern to speak of. Even the writer begins to question whether the Awakenings were a result of his tests, or a simple coincidence resulting from deliberately surrounding himself with Sleepers with great potential for Awakening. The tone of the passages sinks back into detached coldness once again.))

June 10th, 2010.

“The next test subject is secured. I’m trying something very different this time; will be an extremely complex spell, and I’m unsure of how it will react with a living being. Better to proceed cautiously and run it on Etzel first.

Tomorrow though. Can’t remember the last time I slept.”

((From this point forward, the handwriting of the entries becomes noticeably different; harsh, angry scrawls, where before it was tight and disciplined.))

June 12th, 2010.
“Flipping back through this book is sickening. Not for what he did, no, but for the hypocrisy of it. All those tears shed for the humans he hurt, as though they were the only ones.

I remember how he kept spirits trapped in those lanterns like insects, binding us against our wills. I remember the nightly torture and tests inflicted upon us so that his precious humans might have to suffer a little less when the time came.
Yet you could “forgive yourself” for that, couldn’t you, Angoz?

I am his legacy - a maimed spirit and patchwork beast - and that thought disgusts me more than anything he has written down in these pages. In every way, I am the monster he has forced me into – sick, spiteful, and pathetic.

But no spirit in my service will be bound or harmed. They will work for me of their own free will, and be rewarded accordingly. I can think of no better way to spit on his memory.”

June 24th, 2010
“There is no escape from this malformed body, this state of being a crawling, festering thing. No waking up from this nightmare. Even shapeshifting into another form is only a temporary relief from it, though one that I gladly accept.

Angoz’s soul . . . my soul . . . is deeply damaged, held together by Supernal willpower and little else. I felt it happen as it shifted from his possession to mine, fractured by that moment of trauma. It’s a mage’s soul, and ill-fitting, operating at only a fraction of its potential, and even then clawing at my insides the whole way.
The Astral Realms reject me entirely. Three times now, I’ve tried to meditate at the Hallow, but the doors of my own Oneiros remain closed to me. When I try to draw out the Mana into myself, the substance slips through my will, as though recoiling from me.”

September 10th, 2010.
“I never expected to miss Angoz. But having someone to hate is still someone, and all I have left now are the rats.

I’ve made contact with a handful of spirits, and while some are willing to work for me, none will stay in my presence for any longer than is necessary. They’re afraid.
I rarely leave the sewers, or even the Sanctum. As much as this place is a reminder of my own living hell, it’s also the only safe place. If a mage were to realize what I really am underneath the Life magic and illusions, I would likely not survive the encounter.

November 1st, 2010.
“A dog fell into an open sewer hole today. A stray, I think, all spotted and dirty and thin with its two back legs broken. No collar.

I carried it back to the Sanctum. Healed its legs. I don’t know why. Maybe I really am that desperate for companionship. The dog eyed me warily, but it did not bite, or worse – try to run.

And then . . . I don’t know what triggered it. There was just this feeling, this mixture of rage and hunger and desperation, and the animal cried out as was swallowed up alive, body and mind, just as Angoz was. Not eaten so much as absorbed and assimilated. Just like that, a trickle of Mana, or something like it, flowed back into me, and I was sated.
I can still hear the dog, whimpering and snarling from somewhere in the back of my mind. Angoz too. I wish I knew how to make them stop.

December 3rd, 2010.
“I must find a way out. Living like this can hardly be called living at all.
An unbroken body. An untarnished Supernal soul. I judge both to be unachievable as I am now. Sometimes, what is shattered cannot be put back together, regardless of effort.

But another’s mind can be usurped on the cusp on enlightenment, thrown out and my consciousness seated in its place. I will experience a proper Awakening, even if it must be via proxy and theft.

So it comes to this again; the seeking of potential. The tests will continue. I will be whole again.

((You start to get an eerie feeling of Déjà vu as you read on. There is the kidnapping of Sleepers, the horrific torture, the hopes of enlightenment – it’s all the same, just with a different motivation this time. More deaths, more broken minds. And while Angoz’s entries became colder, this writer seems to grow more desperate the more time passes without a single successful Awakening.))

((There is something odd that happens only a few times. The writer describes kidnapping a Sleeper as usual, but instead of experimenting on them, they compel them to treat them as they would a good friend, and simply talk with them for a time. Their memories of the experience are wiped, and they are allowed to go free, unharmed. But the majority of these stories have no such happy ending.))

((The last entry in the journal is very recent :))

“I’ve been blessed with not one, but two prospects this time
. Nolan, the psychic talent, I’ve had my eye on for a while, but the second took me by surprise. She practically wandered right onto my doorstep.

A Proximus. The threads of her destiny practically glow under Fate, with a strength and immediacy that I’ve rarely seen. Someone’s hour is coming ‘round.

And of course, she’s surrounded by a pack of mages, but I find that I simply don’t care anymore. This may be the best chance I ever get. To have a life back . . . any risk seems worthwhile now.”
